The word “classical” is loaded! When people hear the phrase classical education, many images come to mind - rows of children chanting Latin declensions, piles of Great Books, or lofty lectures about philosophy. To complicate things, there are also many different “schools” today that claim the word classical, sometimes leaving parents a bit unsure of what it really means. Not to mention, Classical education being sometimes associated with nationalism- it’s a lot and a bit confusing. So, what do we mean by classical at In Conversation? For us, a Classical Charlotte Mason Education- centres the principles and practices of Charlotte Mason while acknowledging she was a part of an old and beautiful tradition of learning which all people benefit from engaging. We believe this type of education rightly takes into account the whole person by answering the questions humans have always asked- "who is a person, how are they formed and to what end?"However, we do not seek to reenact the Charlotte Mason method exactly as she did in the 1800's, neither do we seek to reform it, molding it to unrecognizable modern standards, rather we work in a spirit of renewal, keeping the heart and brilliant methods of Miss Mason while wisely adapting them for each unique child, their unique calling, educational context and community.
